Exploiting the synergy of research flights during recent airborne observation campaigns in the European Arctic
We are pleased to invite you to a four-day workshop where we will jointly explore the synergy of measurements from different aircraft that were used simultaneously during the (AC)3-HALO, ACAO, ISLAS, and (AC)3 Polar-5/6 field campaigns in the European Arctic in spring 2022. In addition, we want to exploit the availability of airborne observations in other seasons, and over multiple years in sequence from the M-Phase campaign in October 2022, the M2C campaign in 2023, and the CAESAR campaign in 2024.
Our goal with this workshop is to identify the potential for synergy and additional value from looking jointly at the state and processes of the European Arctic. Specific topics of interest include air mass transformation during CAOs and WAIs, remote-sensing and in-situ measurements of cloud properties from different aircraft, measurements of INPs, and others. We will also explore the potential to identify Lagrangian matches between air masses measured by different aircraft. Results from airborne campaigns in other years and seasons may allow to assess the representativeness of individual flights.
The workshop will be organised as a sequence of plenary sessions with keynote presentations from the different campaigns, followed by discussions around specific flights that were either coordinated or took place simultaneously. Additional time will be allocated to a poster session and several short talks. A icebreaker session, optional excursion in the nearby mountains or coast, and joint workshop dinner provide arenas for social interactions.
In addition for individual scientists to identify the potential for writing joint papers, we anticipate that this workshop will provide a broader perspective on the unique airborne research activity in the European Arctic during recent years. A sister workshop is planned to be conducted in association with the AMS conference in Maryland, USA. Both workshops in combination would allow to provide valuable recommendations for forthcoming coordinated campaigns from the international community. A short perspective paper or workshop summary is planned to be published in BAMS or similar.
