Exploiting the synergy of recent airborne atmospheric observation campaigns in the European Arctic

We are pleased to invite you to a four-day workshop where we will jointly explore the synergy of atmospheric measurements from different aircraft that were used simultaneously during the (AC)3-HALO, ACAO, ISLAS, and (AC)3 Polar-5/6 field campaigns in the European Arctic in spring 2022. In addition, we want to exploit the availability of airborne observations in other seasons, and over multiple years in sequence from the M-Phase campaign in October 2022, the MC2 campaign in 2023, the CAESAR campaign in 2024, and CELLO-ARCTIC in 2025.
Our goal with this workshop is to identify the potential for synergy and additional value from looking jointly at the state and processes of the European Arctic. Specific topics of interest include air mass transformation during CAOs and WAIs, remote-sensing and in-situ measurements of cloud properties from different aircraft, measurements of INPs, and others. We will also explore the potential to identify Lagrangian matches between air masses measured by different aircraft. Results from airborne campaigns in other years and seasons may allow to assess the representativeness of individual flights. While the primary focus is on airborne measurements, interfacing part of the discussions will also be devoted to interfacing with model evaluation and development work.
The workshop will be organised as a sequence of plenary sessions with keynote presentations from the different campaigns, followed by discussions around specific flights that were either coordinated or took place simultaneously. Additional time will be allocated to a poster session and several short talks. An icebreaker session, optional excursion in the nearby mountains or coast, and joint workshop dinner provide arenas for social interactions.
In addition for individual scientists to identify the potential for writing joint papers, we anticipate that this workshop will provide a broader perspective on the unique airborne research activity in the European Arctic during recent years. A sister workshop is planned to be conducted on 7-8 August 2026 in association with the AMS Madison Summit, USA. Both workshops in combination would allow to provide valuable recommendations for forthcoming coordinated campaigns from the international community. A short perspective paper or workshop summary is planned to be published in BAMS or similar.

Travel and hotel information:
Bergen airport (BGO) is the closest international airport with direct connections from/to Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Hamburg, among others. There are frequent daily departures to Oslo airport Gardermoen (OSL).
The train from Oslo to Bergen takes a scenic route. Duration about 6.5 h. A night train is available. Pre-booking is typically cheaper.
There are many hotels of different price range in Bergen. June is tourism high season, and it may be a good idea to book early. Public transport is well developped and you can use bus and tram to come to the center at (almost) all hours of the day. To get into town from the hotels near the airport takes about 30 min (one way).
June is high season in Bergen, and the annual cultural event Festspillene starts during the same week as the workshop. Making hotel arrangements early is highly advised. Hotels in Bergen nearby the Geophysical Institute are:
– Hotel Park
– Citybox hotels
– Scandic hotels
See here for some suggestions from Booking.com. Prices for a single room typically start at ~1300 kr/night (~120 EUR)
You can also look for rooms in hotels further out of town, in particular near the airport. The city tram runs from the airport downtown, which takes about 35 min, and runs from early to late. It is not necessary and generally not recommended to rent a car for the duration of the workshop.
